VTech V.Motion - Our Review

V.Motion
is an active learning system is designed for younger kids which combines motion-activated video gaming with educational content to teach 3 - 7-year-olds maths, reading, science, spelling, and logical thinking. The console comes with one wireless controller and one game (Action Mania) along with standard connection cables to connect to your television.

VTech has done a good job of putting together an easy to use package that has everything you need in the box to get started. The V.Motion is presented in nice bright funky colours which is immediately appealing at first glance as well as being chunkier and sturdier than traditional gaming consoles. You'll notice also, that the remote control has larger buttons and the joystick is easy to handle. The center portion of the controller rotates 180 degrees, so the pad can be turned around and used for left handed children. The action button is giant, so it’s nearly impossible to miss when needed. The game pad also has four color-coded buttons and you can rest easy knowing that all components of the V-Motion have been tested to be durable and kid-friendly.

On top of the system is a storage compartment where a lid opens to reveal space to store 9 games, known as smartridges so you can keep everything tidy when not in use.

The system is easy to set up and use and once you have connected the cables to your television, simply insert your game, hit the power button and turn on the controller and you’re up and running.

We liked the fact that at least one game is included with the purchase of the system as it mean't you wont have to rush out and buy games in order to get playing. For each game, there are two control options. Kids can choose to use the joystick as a directional controller, or they can use the motion of the controller itself

The game included with the V.Motion system, Action Mania features three types of game: Rapid Race, Backyard Party and Raise a Racket.
Rapid Race can be played in two modes: Street race, which teaches numbers and letters and Bobsled, which focuses on number order and comparison. In Street Race, players will drive a car in a race against time to fill in missing letters in words, whilst avoiding obstacles on the way. Stars can be collected to add to a player's score. Bobsled is similar and has two levels number order on the easier level and greater or less than on the harder level.

Each of the games have a learning element to them which come with a recommended age guide making it easier to pick a game suitable for your child.

The Smartridges are compatible with all VTech V.Smile gaming systems, and any Smartridge in the VTech library is compatible with the V-Motion - Cross compatibility which is a big selling point.

To sum up, we gave the V.Motion learing system a thumbs up - An easy to use system well designed for younger players and the games are easy for kids to understand. All of the software available for the system comes with some sort of learning element and at around a third of the price of the Wii (RRP: £59.99) makes the system excellent value for money. The graphic's however are not on par with next generation consoles but for younger children it really doesn't matter as they are not adults or avid gamers that demand the high end standard. Also the fact that you can play any game in VTech library from other systems is a big plus point.
